It’s said that the performer is the second composer. The artist is the proof of the elevated human expression and manifestation. Music can still be an art. And all these things are ironically valid and even defiant, in an era when a band has been born to live for an album, for a summer or for a top, and the free and conscious choice of a repertoire, the joy of singing, the magic of the relation with the audience and even the honest emphasize of your own qualities have become an act of courage. So has become the release of a “live” album. But if we return to the healthy principles of the musical vocation we realize that everything is natural and an artistic performance is an act of normality. Singing and playing some of your favourite songs is just an exercise of admiration and freedom. It’s a way of paying a tribute to the great musicians who have marked your existence. Of course, an original and subtle way of arranging and interpreting the songs emphasize the novel feature of the event. What you propose to yourself is everything that matters, the goal you want to achieve, the path you want to follow. And the protagonists of this album belong for sure to the category of those who dedicate their lives to music, who promote values and deliberately state their intentions, the energy and the interactive skills in a high class artistic performance. Actually, this duo is an idea, a co-operation of two friends who enjoy performing together, going out together and laughing, traveling and finding joy both in simple things and in those which apparently are not accessible to everybody. But many times, the stage offers the chance to solve the mystery of these things and to make them accessible to others , too. But not to everybody. What would it be like if everybody knew everything?
Sunday, November 14th, Timisoara. A terrible weather. It’s raining and it’s cold. The“Ion Vidu” Art College’s concert hall was holding the 14th edition of the Blues-Jazz Gala, the second night. Between two performances of genuine jazz, honoring Bela Kamocsa’s invitation, the recital of the duo Berti Barbera/ Nicu Patoi seemed to be a curiosity. The two are entering the stage. The stage welcomes them and this is a first important step in creating the ideal atmosphere for confessions. The second element: the sublime acoustics of one of the best performance hall in Europe. An hour has passed as a dream. Each song was presented as a real story, with not too many protective veils, cosmetics or special effects. Directly, honestly and clean, as if you appeared naked in front of hundreds of people and you should explain your presence there. More than that, as you had to draw their attention and leave them a good impression about you. “Confident Stories”, stories told with a special gift, secrets told in front of a warm and generous public that encourages you to unveil yourself. The concert, overtaken by the Analog TV Timisoara was not supposed to produce an album. It became an album after the two musicians had decided to immortalize a special moment. Their first appearance as a duo on the stage, the perspective of an unusual artistic performance as well as the chance to edit a recording with no over-dubs, with a direct overtaking, without superimpositions, the raw material, with no modifications at all, except the adapting of the audio format through mastering. Confident. With everything that a concert involves: the atmosphere, relationship, small mistakes, status, mood, moment. You cannot help reviving, or stopping. More, any detail, including the mistakes, are much easier to be noticed. Especially when there are two people there. The exact, unaltered rendering of a moment of intimacy. But the joy finely expressed through the art of sound must be accepted in its pure form. This is why you can accept this album, and you can consider it a confession and keep it in your collection. This is why you shoult try this at home, too. |
