ALANIS MORISSETTE - “UNDER RUG SWEPT” – 2002 – Warner

She’s back. With all the attention Alanis Morissette’s career has gained, it’s amazing to think that on the release of her third studio CD she has yet to see her 28-th birthday. “Under Rug Swept” finds her in the producer’s role, a position she seems at least the same comfortable with at this stage than songwriter. Actually it’s her first solo effort, writing and producing the whole package herself. While the shocking honesty of her music drew the public’s initial attention on her first album, “Jagged Little Pill”, “Under Rug Swept” have helped to clarify her principal talents. Her melodic sense and expressive voice remain the most impressive aces in her hand. And that’s a good thing, because her lyrics have increased with the language of psychology rather than poetry. It’s hard to imagine she could make the words fit in a song. But pick any track and Morissette makes the unworkable lyrics work, dancing with her voice over dense amounts of jargon and subtle terms. Instrumentally, Alanis isn’t breaking new ground, but the sound is solid and mature, easy to recognize, every tone is enlivened by well-blended electronic and acoustic elements and the songs are well selected. Longtime Alanis friend and veteran Canadian singer-songwriter Tim Thorney is credited on guitar and bass and much of the album was recorded at his Toronto studio. Plus, guests including MeShell Ndegeocello, Jane’s Addiction’s Eric Avery, Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Flea and Stone Temple Pilot’s Dean De Leo make you feel their presence. The album is a full display of confidence and talent and shows Alanis Morissette in a gracious form of artistical evolution. She’s got nothing to lose, and “Under Rug Swept” sounds like an artist who is ready to accept whatever this “yummy” world is offering her.
